Blue Voyage in Bodrum
The concept of "Blue Voyage", which arose from the culture-aimed
research journeys made by Cevat Şakir, Azra Erhat, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu
and their friends at the early sixties, is today still a popular
activity in tourism.
Being on a gullet, sailing in the turquoise water of Aegean and Mediterranean seas, racing with dolphins, mooring in uninhabited bays of Turkey where access is limited only to sea, diving in the warm and clear waters which witnessed many civilisations in the region, dining and wining on board under the clear skies, listening the sound of silence, appreciating the beauty of nature...That's blue voyage.
Boats, which put out to sea with a route starting especially from Bodrum and continuing to the south and which are peculiar to the Aegean and the Mediterranean, form a dense sea traffic in the summer months and form a potential on the sea as much as the tourism movement on the land.
In the boat trips arranged today, it is possible to rent boats with dimensions and shapes according to your taste, with or without its crew, as you wish. In the Blue Journeys, usually Gullet Boats are used. This historical boat has an esthetic that is peculiar to itself with its completely wooden body. The Gulet Boats, which are designed with the most beautiful samples of handicraft, were used as war ships in the old ages and as fishing boats till the near past. Besides the sailing journeys made into the history, you have the opportunity to rent a sailing boat through the tour agencies that are present to offer service to the sea addicts. The wonderful view, which starts with the natural structure of Gökova Gulf along the road, will follow you till the end of the journey and you will leave yourself to the deep blue waters of the region.
The Turquoise coast extends from Kuşdası the north to Antalya in the south, a distance of approximately 350 nautical miles. With the intricate undulations of the coast that distance more than doubles, and across each gulf and around each headland lie a new hay, small village or ancient site.
From Bodrum the possible itineraries are endless. North, around the tip of the Bodrum peninsula lies the secluded Gulf of Güllük, featuring dozens of deserted bays, where lush forests descend to a rocky shore and the tinkling of goat bells from the herds grazing the wooded hillsides are the only sounds the visitor hears. The Gulf of Güllük also features the ancient sites of Didyma just a few kilometres inland and lassos, where the seaborne visitor can anchor among the ruins while sampling the latest catch of the local fishermen.
Southeast from Bodrum is the Gulf of Gökova, more popular than Güllük. Gökova's numerous bays each offer their own pleasure and style and the seaside villages and tavernas provide a more crowded, lively atmosphere. Gökova is also famous for the remains of the ancient island city Keramos with its most popular attraction, Cleopatras beach, rumored to have been imported from north Egypt for Cleopatra and her lover Anthony to play upon. At the extreme southwestern end of Gökova are the remains of the once great city of Knidos, home to Praxiteles greatest sculpture of the ancient world. Today Knidos is difficult to visit except by boat and the ancient harbour shelters yachts as it did thousands of years ago.
Beyond the Gulf of Gökova lay 200 miles of coastline south to Antalya. Nestling beneath the long finger of the Datça Peninsula is the Gulf of Hisarönü, with hundreds of tiny bays and islands for the seaborne visitor to explore. Beyond Hisarönü is the popular resort of Marmaris whose huge hay is home to the Turkish Aegean's largest hotels and marina.
