Bodrum Cup : Also the Bodrum Cup races takes place in Bodrum
The Bodrum Cup is the only yacht regatta in Europe (maybe even in the
world) run with passengers on board, who, if they wish, can double as
crew. Thus chartering is combined with racing and anyone in the world,
even a total landlubber, can take part in the regatta. So, the Bodrum
Cup is a regatta for beginners as well as old salts.
In the sense stated above the Bodrum Cup regatta s not merely a race, but an international yacht festival. It is run along the favorite routes of the "Blue Voyage" the name given the cruises in the turquoise seas of the south coast of Turkey, studded with hundreds of beautiful covers, rich in natural beauty and traces of more than 4.000 yearn of history. The racers, crews and passengers alike visit major stops along this route during the Bodrum Cup regatta.
The objective of the Bodrum Cup is to encourage and expand the use of sails among Turkey's majestic fleet of traditional wooden charter yachts known as "gullets". The forebears of gullets have cruised these waters for centuries under canvas. This also encourages the construction of better boats benefiting from modern technology and better suited for sailing.
The Bodrum cup is reserved exclusively for wooden yachts Modern wood-epoxy-laminated boats are welcome. CRP or steel hulled vessels can also join, but only as non-competing participants. We want the tradition of yesterday's yachts to survive while adapting the advancements of contemporary technology.
The Bodrum Cup is an annual festival organized by ERA yachting and Tourism. Turkey, to promote an interest in sailing among ail people of the world whom we expect to host aboard our yachts. We hope that as international participation increases the Bodrum Cup will emerge as a milestone of friendship and fraternity in the world of mariners of all nations.
Bodrum is the original home of gullets. Yacht tourism in Turkey started in Bodrum where the elite of the fleet is still moored. So it is only natural that the major event in commercial yachting should be named after the capital of Turkish yacht tourism. Bodrum, however is not confined to yachting. The history of this town extends well into millennium before Christ was born. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum (the monumental tomb of King Mausoleus of Karya) was erected here. In medieval ages the Knights of St. John built a formidable castle here which still dominates Bodrum. Now this majestic fortress symbolizes romanticism, art, history, culture and unlimited fun. Noted for its carefree end Bohemian atmosphere. Bodrum never sleeps, The Bodrum Cup is a chance to enjoy both aspects of Bodrum : fun loving and seagoing.
